Cathy C.Church

Ms. Church attended George Washington University and Antioch School of Law. She began her legal career in Maryland and moved her practice to the Upper Peninsula in 1991 when she became the founding partner in Advice and Legal Services, P.C. 

Ms. Church accepted a position as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney with the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office in 1994 where she eventually focused on criminal domestic violence prosecutions. 

 Ms. Church has taught extensively. Her audiences have included judges, prosecutors, defense attorney, law enforcement officials, most members of the criminal justice system, university students, high school students and lay individuals in the area of the domestic violence nature, prevalence and criminal justice response. 

Ms. Church founded Access Justice Now, a non-profit dedicated to providing service, solace, legal representation and education to and for, victims of intimate violence. Currently Ms. Church is volunteering her services as the agency’s CEO. 

Presently, Ms. Church consults on a variety of issues involving domestic violence and the criminal justice system. She presents to prosecuting attorneys about Rural Prosecution of Domestic Violence, consults on domestic violence within the criminal justice system and writes articles for legal professionals on the various tools available to assist victims of intimate violence. 

 In April 2009, Ms. Church began the Intimate Violence Deaths in the News Blog at http://intimateviolencedeathnews.blogspot.com/ where she monitors and collects news article from around the nation describing acts of Intimate and Domestic Violence Homicide. 
 
Ms. Church also serves the community as the president of the Marquette League of Women Voters, a board member of the United Way of Marquette County, a member on Sexual Harassment Task Force at Northern Michigan University, a member of the state Bar of Michigan Special Committee on Domestic Violence and as a certified domestic violence trainer for the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Commission. 


Cara Korhonen

Ms. Korhonen attended Northern Michigan University and Michigan State University, Detroit College of Law. She began her legal career in Ishpeming, Michigan as an associate with Burcham Law Office.

Previously, Ms. Korhonen clerked for the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal Court in Baraga Michigan and the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan, Northern Division in Marquette, MI.

Ms. Korhonen focuses her practice on Labor Union representation, representing Unions throughout the Upper Peninsula in both the private and public sectors. She also represents clients in Chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcies, social security disability, unemployment matters and family law, including divorce, custody, support, abuse/neglect and personal protection matters.

Presently, Ms. Korhonen is on the Foster Care Review Board which has the daunting task of reviewing foster care cases throughout the Upper Peninsula. She also provides pro bono legal services for victims of Intimate Violence as well as indigent individuals through the Legal Services Internet Research Project.

 Ms. Korhonen authored “Adoption under the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978: History, Purpose and Problems.” Sovereignty Symposium 2000 and co-authored “Personal Protection Orders in Michigan: Enforcement” in the Michigan Family Law Journal, Volume 39, Number 8, October 2009.

 Ms. Korhonen resides in Marquette County with her husband Kevin and two sons.
